In 1949, a simply known as Dental Supplies Limited was duly registered as a liability company with the Government of Newfoundland. The founder, T. Shannon Clift, became owner and major shareholder, with directors Dr. E. P. Kavanagh (Tubby) and Thomas B. Clift

At the inception of the company on June 8, 1949, there were nine Dentists practicing in St. John's, Newfoundland and seven Dentists practicing in smaller communities,

for a total of sixteen Dentists. We now have some 150 Dentists in Newfoundland & Labrador

The late Ernest Bell of Maritime Dental Limited in Halifax was a large influence on our company. Mr. Bell used every opportunity available to him, to speak on our behalf. Through his efforts, we were able to obtain most of the major Dental Manufacturers support. Mr. Bell was also instrumental of our unofficial change of company name from Dental Supplies Limited to Clift Dental Supplies Limited. Mr. Bell told me on numerous occasions, his only regret was not changing Maritime Dental to Bell Dental. I vowed I would not have this regret.

In 1983, Larry Abbott joined Clift Dental and has steadily moved up to his present position of Managing Director, shareholder and part owner. Tom Clift remains President with his wife Alice as Vice President/Payroll. Helen Barrett has been with the company since 1979 and is responsible for Accounts Payable. Jennifer Clift (1988) has a dual position of Accounts Receivable and Inventory Control. Brenda Abbott is accountable for Cost Management. Both Renee Gulliver (1988 DA Level 1) and Heather Thistle (2002 CDA Level 2) are in sales.

One of the main reasons for the 54-year success of the Company is equipment service. From 1949 to 1999 Tom Clift was in the service end. Larry Abbott started service work in 1986 and is still involved in service of equipment. Larry has had extensive training at Adec, Dental Ez, Dentsply, Siemens and Sci Can..

Today, the responsibility for this vastly expanded department falls on the very capable shoulders of Gordon Mercer. Although Gordon has been with us less than three years, he has had training since then at Adec, Dentsply and Sci Can. We have had so many calls from customers, praising Gordon's work and abilities we could not list them all. He has organized a complete computerized department with some $100,000.00 in parts alone.

Clift Dental Supplies Limited represents most all-major manufacturers of Dental Supplies and Dental Equipment. We still remain Newfoundland and Labradors only complete supply house, with inventory and remain Newfoundland and Labrador's leading Dental supply house.
